If you could choose only three words to describe violinist Balekane Moloisane’s performance style, it’s “fresh, exciting and glamorous”. But of course, you would then be taking her bucket loads of talent as a given. This Johannesburg-based professional electric and acoustic violinist has shared the stage with the likes of Kanye West, Vanessa Mae and Bryan Adams – to name a few.
On picking up her first violin at age 9, she felt the strings of destiny tugging. After just four years of playing, she was included in the South African National Youth Orchestra and became leader of the Johannesburg Youth Ensemble in the same year. Soon after, she was invited to Germany to play with the Landesjugend Orchestra during the summer months for two years. Balekane attended the National School of the Arts, where she specialized in music, and currently plays with professional orchestras such as the Johannesburg Festival Orchestra and Johannesburg Music Initiative.
Balekane’s biggest asset is her ability to play a wide range of music styles – from quiet dinner background music to lively pop and even dance covers. She adds a unique twist to much-loved classics. From light jazz to music you simply cannot sit still to, she can play it. Her classical training has allowed her to explore other music genres and perform them equally well after years of experience – ensuring a fantastic reception wherever she goes.
